Over 1,214 people in Galway city and county called the Irish Cancer Society's helpline during 2009.
The calls formed part of 19,331 communications received from around the country last year, with €700,000 worth of financial aid distributed to those in need.

Thank God for Michael D Higgins. While all those around him are misplacing their memories and losing their seats, Michael D knows exactly what is at the heart of this fanatical backstabbing and mature recollection avoidance - the media.
The incessant modern necessity for the quick fix- the summarisation and conclusion - rather than the actual information and investigation, well Michael D is sick of it all.

Bishop Martin Drennan has admitted to feeling "very ashamed" of the crimes of physical and sexual abuse perpetrated by the clergy and the Church's failure to deal with the abuse.
However, he said, he believed what had happened could not happen again because of policies that the Church had subsequently implemented.

COPE Galway has launched a new initiative to get people in Galway active, fit, meeting new people while helping the most vulnerable living in isolation in our community.
As part of 'Team COPE Galway', COPE wants to recruit a team of people, who would commit to training for, and participating in, a minimum of three activity events during 2010 while raising vital funds for their services and supports in Galway.

Galway could be in line to host the last leg of the 2011/12 Volvo Ocean Race, the Galway Independent has learned.
Both Lisbon and Lorient have now been announced as host cities for the race. However, because of a fall in the number of suitable Asian ports, hopes are still high that Galway will be chosen as a stopover, with the chances of holding the final leg a real possibility.

For the ill informed, it may have been as if the Pope was making a reappearance in Galway 30 years on, but it was simply Father Ted fans once again making their annual pilgrimage to the hallowed Craggy Island.
'Tedheads' began arriving by road and air to pay homage to their hero at the official 2010 Ted Fest from last Thursday.

One local business is vowing to do its bit for the people of earthquake-hit Chile, by offering free calls to their relatives living in Galway.
Communications company FoneNet Galway, located on Dominick Street and Eyre Street, announced this week that they will offer free calls to Chile in an effort to help the thousands of people who have been affected by the natural disaster.

The increase in first-class honours degrees being awarded by third level institutions "is defensible", the President of NUI Galway has said.
Dr Jim Browne was responding to Education Minister Batt O'Keeffe's revelation on Monday that he has launched two major investments into so called 'grade inflation' in university and Leaving Cert results.
